The Ultimate Crash Course for STEM Majors
Red Edition vs. Quartic Play – Which STEM Crash Course Book Should You Choose?
The main difference is the additional material: the Quartic Play includes The Daily Dose, while the Red Edition includes approximately 200 additional pages of advanced math and physics solutions focused on professional presentation, error correction, and verification.

The Main Differences at a Glance
| Feature | Red Edition | Quartic Play |
|---|---|---|
| Crash course reference material | Included | Included |
| Additional content | Approximately 200 pages of advanced solution material | The Daily Dose |
| Focus of the additional material | Writing, checking, and correcting mathematical solutions | Short daily readings for encouragement and reflection |
| Best fit | Readers seeking advanced examples of solution writing | Readers who want the daily reading collection in their physical book |
What the Red Edition Adds
The Red Edition’s additional material emphasizes how to present mathematical work with greater precision. In the video, I show examples involving differential equations, Laplace transforms, the unit impulse function, linear algebra, proofs, and Maxwell’s equations.
These examples move into junior- and senior-level material, with some graduate-level topics. Their purpose is to help readers examine how a solution is written, how its reasoning is communicated, and how errors are identified and corrected.
The earlier crash course material often follows the flow of student notes: work through a problem and arrive at an answer. The additional solution collection places more emphasis on the structure and presentation of that work.
Why I Show Mistakes and Their Corrections
One example in the walkthrough involves two formulas that use the same letter for different parameters. Reusing that symbol without distinguishing its meaning led to an error that affected the work that followed.
I explain how a very small notation issue can send a solution in the wrong direction. The written material preserves selected mistakes and shows their corrections so readers can follow how the problem was found.
This is part of the practical purpose of the collection: learning to inspect your work patiently, track what each symbol means, and explain a correction clearly.
- Define symbols and parameters consistently.
- Check that a formula applies to the situation at hand.
- Review intermediate steps when a result does not behave as expected.
- Explain what changed when correcting an error.
- Verify the final answer against the original question.
What the Quartic Play Adds
The Quartic Play edition shown in the video includes The Daily Dose, a collection of short daily readings. These entries provide an ongoing reading habit alongside the larger STEM reference collection.
If you want encouragement and reflection included in the physical volume, that is the distinguishing feature of the Quartic Play. If your priority is the expanded advanced solution material, the Red Edition is the option highlighted in this comparison.
How to Use These Books in College
I wrote these resources to help students review foundational material, compare their solution writing, and recognize gaps in their methods. They are especially relevant as mathematics, physics, and engineering coursework becomes more demanding.
Attempt your work independently, then use permitted reference material to examine your reasoning and presentation. Follow your syllabus and instructor’s policies when using worked examples or outside resources.
The goal is to develop work you can explain and check yourself. A finished answer becomes more useful when you understand why it follows and how to verify it.
Hardcover and Handmade Formats
In the video, I discuss both printed hardcover editions and handmade versions. The hardcover offers a larger reading format, while some handmade versions use compressed page layouts with smaller text.
Those handmade editions may appeal to readers interested in the craft and collectible nature of the book. Before ordering, review the product listing for dimensions, layout, readability, and included materials.
PDF Access and the Video Library
At the time of this recording, I describe a limited offer that includes PDF access with qualifying hardcover purchases, along with a lifetime access code to the accompanying lesson library for qualifying packages.
The library contains approximately 1,000 videos and podcasts, including recordings of me writing substantial portions of the original crash course. It does not include a complete recording collection for all the newer advanced solutions.
Prices, packages, and bonuses can change. Check the current listing for what your purchase includes and how digital access is delivered.
